Amy Cooper
Amy Cooper’s been doing it on her own since the beginning. Inspired to learn a song she heard when she was 17, she dug out her father’s guitar that had been collecting dust in their basement and ended up writing a song of her own. It would be the first of many.
A San Francisco native, Amy moved to New York to study art and photography while continuing to play and write music. She was inspired by the films of Rainer Werner Fassbiner and the artwork of Egon Schiele and Tracy Emin, as well as the music of Arto Lindsay and Blonde Redhead. She began to reach a creative apex while performing at clubs like CBGB’s, Pianos, and the Village Underground alongside the likes of Juliana Hatfield, Martha Wainwright, and Tracy Bonham.
After living and breathing New York for a few years, she moved back to the Bay Area to begin work on her first album. With the guidance of John Vanderslice and Scott Solter she records Water/Fire at Tiny Telephone studios and releases the album on her own in early 2005.
She heads out solo in support of the album for most of the year, sharing bills with Brandi Carlile, Rachael Yamagata, and Hem.
After moving to Los Angeles, she records a follow-up EP entitled Mirrors with Frank Lenz (Starflyer 59, Pedro the Lion), scheduled to be released on Retone Records (Monsters Are Waiting, The Shys) in early 2007.
